How To Protect Your Things In Storage

Posted on: 8 March 2016

Putting your things in a storage facility is an easy way to make space in your home. Reducing clutter and keeping a clean garage are often impossible if you don't have a place to store some of your things. Many people store seasonal things, while other use their storage for keepsakes and heirlooms. No matter what you have in your storage facility, you obviously want to keep it safe and protected (or else, you wouldn't even bother storing it!). And, keeping your stuff safe means more than just keeping it locked up. This article explains a few things to consider when storing your things in a facility.

Use Plastic Bins

Plastic storage bins are a bit costly, but they are worth it. Many people opt to use recycled cardboard boxes that they find or buy for much cheaper. However, cardboard will not offer as much protection and it is harder to stack. First of all, if you collect a bunch of random cardboard boxes they will be harder to organize. They will not stack as neatly and you won't be able to make such high stacks. You also have to consider what you are putting in the boxes.

Cardboard boxes will not protect photographs or other valuables from moisture. The weight of paper goods might also be too much for a flimsy cardboard box. As a result, you won't be able to fill your box all the way up. Cardboard is also more likely to deteriorate and produce dust. In the end, you won't be able to maximize your storage if you don't use plastic storage bins. It is a good idea to buy the same brand and model of box, so you can make sure they stack efficiently.

Choose the Right Facility

To fully protect your stored things, you want to make sure you choose the best facility. The first thing you should look for is a facility with climate control. Paper and wood can get easily damaged if they are stored in rooms that are too cold or too hot. At the same time, climate controlled units will also regulate the moisture in the air, which can be even more damaging than temperature. So, a climate controlled unit as particularly important if you live in a hot, cold, or damp area.

If you have a climate controlled unit, and keep your stuff in sealed plastic storage bins, you can rest assured that it will be protected. You can store it for long periods without any fears.
